Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立雲林科技大學 === 設計學研究所 === 106 === Vietnam Hoi An ancient city is one of the world most impressed traditional trading port in the whole Southeast Asia, it had been well-preserved for many centuries. Most of the buildings in Hoi An city are still maintained in traditional architectural style from the 18-20th centuries. They are aligned along narrow lanes of traditional type of architecture in Vietnam. In the past 20-30 years, there are many researches had been conducted on or related to city of Hoi An. However, most the researches only focus on formation and development of this ancient city, which only concentrate on historical values or conservation project; and less focus on its architectural features, such as shop-houses, communal houses, pagodas, among others so it leads to a lack of overview of Hoi An characteristic style house. This thesis focuses and provides a more overview of historical and social context of Hoi An’s development as well as studies on the standard facade of Hoi An one–storey shop-houses by applying the method of shape grammar. From these architectural analyzes, we can have a right viewpoint of Hoi An’s traditional, cultural, and historical values, which will benefit to all Vietnam academic researches. Qualitative methods are applied for this study, including collecting research data through visual ethnography, observations on street houses in Hoi An and related literature on the subject. The establishment of those documents is grounded on the formalism of shape and shape grammar provided by George Stiny. This methodology presents the overview and particular view on the architecture in Hoi An to gain a deeper understanding about shape grammars in Hoi An shop-houses. The result of this study is expected to serve it in the further architectural maintenance of Hoi An ancient town.
