Currently, Made in China 2025 is the first 10-year guideline that aims to strengthening the nation through manufacturing. During this process, the focus of handicraft industry gradually shifted to engineering industry, and the market share of handicraft industry also decline. Hence, relevant enterprises are faced with difficult problems. Throughout history, Ming Dynasty was the prime period for the development of handicraft industry. In the same era, China was also one of the several countries with the most prosperous commercial economy and handicraft industry around the world. Moreover, furniture made in Ming Dynasty reached the peak of its development. It was unparalleled in the world history of furniture making. Suzhou is known as the birthplace of Ming-style furniture. Its styles and features have been adopted to this day. Hence, the paper takes Ming-style furniture in Suzhou as the object of research. The diamond theory is utilized as the theoretical basis in the research. Meanwhile, historical approach and document literature analysis are also adopted. According to the five aspects of government and opportunities, production factors, demand conditions, relevant industries and supportive industries, as well as horizontal competition, document literature materials are collected, arranged and analyzed, in order to study the competitive advantages of Ming-style furniture manufacturing industry in Suzhou. The purpose is to propose suggestions and historical references on the current development and improvement of handicraft industry, so as to provide methods and contents for researchers in modern handicraft industry. Based on the diamond theory, the research concludes that Ming-style furniture manufacturing industry in Suzhou involves more than one single competitive advantage. Instead, the multiple advantages consist of three factors: style, material and skills. Moreover, government and opportunities also play important roles. Hence, the current development of traditional handicraft industry should be completed by the external inheritance and protection of government, as well as innovation and transformation within the industry.
