However, when operating ZAB in ambient air, CO2 (400 ppm) in the air can react with alkaline electrolytes to form carbonates which shorten the lifetime of the ZAB. In this work, we fabricated electrospun polystyrene (PS)/polyethylenimine (PEI) fibers membrane to capture CO2 before the fuel (ambient air) admitted into the ZAB so that the performance of the ZAB can be enhanced. The result show that, the PS/PEI fibers possessed the CO2 adsorption capacity of 3.42 mmolCO2/gadsorbent (based on the overall quantity of the membrane) or 7.58 mmolCO2/gPEI (based on the weight of PEI) at room temperature. The CO2 capacity retains 91% of the initial value after 15 cycles of adsorption-desorption process. In the gas permeability study, CO2 concentration remained at 0 ppm for 16 hours under a air flow of 30 ml/min with 400 ppm CO2. In the ZAB study, the ZAB cell equipped with the PS/PEI fiber exhibited a better discharge capacity of 802 mAh/g comparing to the ZAB without the CO2 adsorption membrane (762 mAh/g).
