Obesity causes a negative impact not only in individual physical health but also psychosocial health. Due to the negative stereotype toward obesity from media, obese people are unsatisfied with their appearance. The emotional pressure and the impact on making friends and work will happen, resulting in physical, psychological, and social burden, and even affect the quality of life. The purposes of this study were to investigate the differences between the pre-bariatric surgery and after bariatric surgery on the body image and quality of life in obese patients. A longitudinal research method with a single group pre-/post-repeated measurement design was used. The 34 study subjects with morbid obesity (BMI≧35 kg/m2 combined with related comorbidity) that underwent bariatric surgery were recruited from a regional teaching hospital in northern Taiwan. The instruments were used in this study including demographic data form, MBSRQ-AS, and SF-36. Obesity related physiologic index was also collected. It spent 10-15 minutes to accomplish the questionnaires. Data were collected at 4 points, including pre-op (T1), 1-month after surgery (T2), 3-month after surgery (T3), and 6-month after surgery (T4). Descriptive statistics were presented by count, percentage, mean and SD. The differences of body image and quality of life among different time points were compared using the GEE. The results of the study showed that after the operation, the overall body image (Wald χ2=27.67, P<.001), appearance evaluation (Wald χ2=37.03, P<.001), appearance orientation (Wald χ2=16.82, P<.001), self-classified weight (Wald χ2=55.21, P<.001), and body areas satisfaction (Wald χ2=16.12, P=.001) were significantly better than the pre-operative phase except for the overweight preoccupation (Wald χ2=5.20, P=.158). In the physical health facet of quality of life, the four aspects of physical functioning (Wald χ2=72.01, P<.001), role limitation due to physical problems (Wald χ2=45.27, P<.001), bodily pain (Wald χ2=41.64, P<.001), and general health (Wald χ2=61.36, P<.001) showed significant improvement at 1 month after surgery. In psychological health facet, the three aspects of vitality (Wald χ2=89.06, P<.001), social functioning (Wald χ2=31.86, P<.001), and mental health (Wald χ2=52.00, P<.001) have progressed significantly in the first month after surgery. The role limitation due to emotional problems (Wald χ2=29.66, P<.001) has been significantly improved at 3 months after surgery. The results of this study showed that morbid obese patients have improved their body image and quality of life after bariatric surgery. It is anticipated that the results can provide information for health professionals to take care of the patients with morbid obesity in the future. LIU, FEN 劉棻 2019 學位論文 ; thesis 82 zh-TW
