Some chronically ill patients with high blood pressure or high blood lipids are also the main cause of heart disease. Electrocardiograms (ECG) measurement becomes very important. However, the price of most of ECG machines on the market is too expensive and not easy to carry. Abnormal conditions in patients with heart disease are often unpredictable and fatal. Therefore, a portable ECG measuring instrument is needed. For such request, we propose an analog front-end circuit chip that includes an instrumentation amplifier, high-pass filters, low-pass filters, and a post-amplifier. Compared with discrete circuits, integrated circuits are smaller and more efficient. This paper consists of two parts. The first part contains an operational amplifier design, pre-layout simulations and a circuit layout. The second part contains single-lead and multi-lead ECG analog front-end circuit designs, pre-layout simulations and circuit layouts. We used the UMC 0.18um 2P6M CMOS process provided by National Applied Research Laboratories (NAR Labs) / Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI) to implement the proposed ECG analog front-end circuits. Using our proposed ECG analog front-end circuit device and an embedded microcontroller with built-in analog-to-digital converter, ECG analog signal can be digitized to display, store or diagnose.
