碩士 === 長榮大學 === 社會工作學系碩士班 === 107 === Abstract
The largest percentage of school-age children with disabilities is children with learning disabilities. Books and relevant research have rarely mentioned families of this population, the subject of families of children with learning disabilities are touched upon mostly in graduate students' theses, and the research methods are qualitative with a focus on exploring mothers' caregiving experiences of children with learning disabilities.
Learning disabilities are referred as "hidden disabilities" by Hong (1995), children with learning disabilities appear to be the same as those without learning disabilities, therefore caregivers of children with learning disabilities deal with insidious stress. Boyd (2002) and Roach et al. (1999) suggest that caregivers of children with learning disabilities encounter more stress than caregivers of children without learning disabilities. Heiman & Berger (2008) also point out that social support is crucial to caregivers of children with learning disabilities, and social support can enhance caregivers' coping skills and strengthen family interaction.
This research investigated if parenting stress affected caregivers' well-being and if social support regulated the impact parenting stress had on caregivers' well-being by exploring the relationships between parenting stress, caregivers' social support and well-being.
The researcher used quantitative surveys and purposive sampling, students with learning disabilities in the special education programs in Kaohsiung elementary schools were the target population, special education coordinators and special education teachers in the schools assisted with the data collecting. The total number of 175 questionnaires were collected and 130 of them were valid.
Findings of the research are (1) Parenting stress of caregivers of children with learning disabilities affected their well-being. (2) Social support could not regulate the negative effects parenting stress have on caregivers' well-being.
