Previous studies have suggested that cerebral ischemia enhances reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and leads to further oxidative damage. In addition, appropriate trace elements level and antioxidant enzyme activity is also considered to be important for the brain function. Curcumin has important biological propeties such as neuroprotection, anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory, and cardiovascular protection. Our experimental results showed that pretreatment rats with curcumin prior to cerebral ischemia may not only significantly reduce the lipid peroxidation, but also reduce trace elements level including iron (Fe), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), aluminum (Al), chromium (Cr), and arsenic (As). Conversely, antioxidant enzyme activity of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and trace element level of magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), and selenium (Se) in the brain cortex were significantly increased in curcumin pretreatment rats as compared with the ischemic rats. In summary, our resuets showed that neuroprotectire mechanism of curcumin is closely associated with reducing lipid peroxidation, enhancing antioxidant activity, and changing trace element level.
