There are numerous old stories and memories behind every old house. Since the
past few years, there has been a vintage trend, which has made numerous people
affectively unwilling to abandon an old house. Both governmental and
non-governmental authorities promote to reuse old houses, making it a trend to
preserve and reuse old houses, and to reconstruct old houses built in different years.
These old houses thus have new images for residential or commercial purposes.
Literature collected in this study indicates that houses in Taiwan are
evidently older, and that the renovation of the appearance of old and archaic buildings
is financed because of urban renewal plans that are proactively promoted by the
government, which encourages people’s intention to renovate old houses and makes it
a trend to reuse old houses. This study establishes a restoration model that is
commonly used in renovating old houses based on the exploration and discussion of
actual renovation cases. More specifically, this study explores and discusses how
sand-blasters are used to remove the dirt that has been accumulated for ages on wood
components, how to treat wood components with termite infestation, how to prevent
wall mold, and how to change pipelines and utility lines to appropriately resolve
problems for old house renovation.
In addition, this study also aims to take an innovative approach to integrate
the history and cultural characteristics of old houses to create their new value. Let us
take for instance, integrating concepts such as reusing old components, localizing
co-creation, introducing cultural and creative industries to enhance value, and inviting
hipsters to enhance value and to create value innovation through creative
reconstruction and innovative management. This will provide a new opportunity for
people to renovate, reconstruct, and reuse old houses, linking old houses with modern
life to create new memory and new value in the future.
