Academic research on youth entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship has not adequately addressed the process by which recent graduates find their way into social innovation. This study examines how young people explain their entrepreneurial processes and transitions through narrative, focusing on projects started by five young innovators: Mangia Fa Studio, Skidschool, Bank Of Culture, Papacode, and City Wanderer as research subjects. Based on comparison of multiple cases, this study summarizes the intrinsic and extrinsic influences on choices young people make in engaging in social entrepreneurship, the resources available to them, and the understanding of social entrepreneurship young people obtain through the experience of starting a business, and examines the interrelationships among these factors. Results found that engagement in social entrepreneurship is a complex process for young people which requires the accumulation of various influences and ideas over time, and often requires multiple attempts. This process is a continuation of their school experience, and requires continuous adaptation and adjustment in response to various uncertainties. Analysis of this process by which young people engage in social entrepreneurship is of note to a range of academic disciplines and a holistic approach to analysis can help government policy makers promote social entrepreneurs among young people and their families.
