Paul Desmond's alto saxophone tone, musical style, and the hard bop jazz style which formed a different cool jazz style, has influenced many saxophone players such as alto saxophonist Allison Neale, and “Pure Desmond” of German Quartet. My thesis discusses the four tunes in the album Take Ten, which was released in 1963, “Take Ten,” “Black Orpheus,” “Embarcadero,” and “Samba de Orpheus.” Through an examination of the “cool Jazz” music background, Paul Desmond's life, the music structure and improvisation of the selection of the recordings, this analysis classifies Desmond’s improvisational techniques. This thesis discusses the four jazz standards by understanding Paul Desmond's impromptu techniques and application of these elements in the improvisational vocabulary.
