The spiritual meaning and material compositions of the literati garden interact and complement each other, the trational space of them conveys the close connection between man and nature, which is related to the comprehensive planning of multi-oriented thinking in morden times. This study puts forward a landscape planning and design conception of “making the past serve the present”, and advocates the operational flow of planning and design by ideological derivation design techniques. First of all, this paper conducts analysis through the way of literature and field visits to Chinese literati gardens, it takes the Suzhou Humble Administrator's Garden as an example to explore the unique spatial meaning and cultural elements of Chinese garden and analyze the spirit of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism and the correspondence between code and meaning of gardens, and to further explore the basis and method of transforming tradition into practice in modern space. After comparing cases, this paper proposes the design principles connected with the modern landscape, through field observation and semi-structured interview it investigates the spatial characteristics and activity forms of the open space of Fu Jen University, and applies modern design princials to implement the literati garden spirit in the planning and design of the open space of Fu Jen University to reflect this concept. The three enlightenments from the study are as follow : 1. The referential significance of literati garden to the modern landscape is not only the structure but also the spatial characteristic, the meaning form and other multi-oriented thinking. 2. The operation process from ideology to implementation tools, together with the spatial form and characteristics determined by the behavior patterns, can not only strengthen the conceptual meaning of the overall environment, but also retain the function of the original spaces. 3. The future planning direction of the campus improvement plan can be derived from the inheritance of literati garden spirit to form the adjustment and supplement mode of the open space planning of campus.
