A quasi-experimental design was adopted based on the pre-test and post-test of two groups. The subjects were demented elderly residents, divided into the experimental group and the control group--each group with 15 persons, in a nursing home in New Taipei City. In the 8-week study period, both groups carried out daily activities, while the experimental group received an extra 30-50 minutes of horticultural activity once a week. The effect assessment instruments were "Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE)", "Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS)", "Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE)" and "Gardening Well-being Scale". After comparing the pre- and post-test of both groups, the results showed that the horticultural therapy reduced the level of depression (t=-2.66, p=.015) and improved the horticultural well-being (t=7.76, p=.001) in the experimental group. Although there was no significant difference in the effectiveness of self-esteem promotion, the self-esteem improved when the depression relieved in both groups. The findings of the study could provide the insights for the horticultural therapy promotion and the caring in nursing homes. CHWO,MIAO-JU 卓妙如 2019 學位論文 ; thesis 75 zh-TW
