Lessons in Mandarin textbooks (Hanlin version) for elementary school lower grade levels that touched on environmental issues were used as the basis for developing new course designs and activities. The objective was to explore the feasibility of integrating environmental education into Mandarin education. Therefore, the students’ behaviors before and after environmental education were evaluated. This study adopted literature analysis and action research methods and integrated the course designs with the Hi-Teach education system. Next, this study compiled various data of students in real-time to show educational outcomes instantly. The obtained results may serve as references and sources of comparison to educators and researchers when conducting follow-up studies in the future. The study results are as follows: 1. During the courses, the students were asked to use their senses to observe Mother Nature, positive effects of the environment on human beings, human-induced harm on the environment, and feasible methods for remedying the induced harm. 2. Based on concepts of environmental knowledge and ecological conservation, the courses were closely related to students’ living environments. The effects of environmental issues on individuals, schools, families, and communities were taught to help the students understand environmental problems caused by their personal behaviors and the permanent effects that these problems had on human societies and Earth. 3. The course designs allowed the students to experience and perceive natural environments, through which they were inspired to address the environmentally friendly actions that they were able to take in their daily life. Furthermore, they were able to influence their family members by having them engage/take environmentally friendly behaviors and actions. 4. The use of mind maps based on environmental education in textbooks enhanced students’ environmental education knowledge, and inspired them to take actions for environmental protection and show an attitude of cherishing and protecting the environment. To support interdisciplinary education activities advocated in the new curriculum guidelines of Taiwan’s 12-year compulsory education, this study endeavored to embody concepts of “taking initiatives, engaging in interaction, and creating mutual benefits,” which may serve as references to interdisciplinary course researchers, designers, and executors in the future.
