There are two directions of this research. One is the effect on students and reading interest, reading motives and reading environment from different backgrounds, the other is the effect on academic achievement and reading interest, reading motives and reading environment. The questionnaire method is adopted on this research. The subjects are the sixth grade students in the elementary school from New Taipei City. The samples are 125, and 116 valid copies are collected. The title of the questionnaire is "The correlation of reading preference and academic achievement – among students at the sixth grade in the elementary school". The survey was analyzed by descriptive statistics and Anova, t-test and product-moment correlation, and the findings are as follows: 1. There are significant differences of reading interest among senior students from different background. 2. There is a significant difference of reading motivation among sixth-grade students from different background. 3. The reading interest of students is related to academic performance. 4. The reading motivation of students is related to academic achievement and academic performance. 5. The reading environment of students is related to academic achievement and academic performance.
