Method: The questionnaire survey method was adopted. The subjects were teachers in 19 elementary schools in Kinmen County during the academic year of 2017. A total of 356 copies of the questionnaire were distributed, and 351 responses were returned, with 348 of which being valid. These responses were analyzed using methods including descriptive statistics, independent-sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson product-moment correlation, with a significant level α=.05. Results: (1) The analysis of leisure activity participation among the elementary school teachers in Kinmen County showed that the levels of participation in “sports and fitness activities”, “personal leisure activities”, and “social recreational activities” were slightly lower than the intermediate level; (2) The job stress in the elementary school teachers ranged between the intermediate and low levels, with the stress from “class management” being the highest; (3) 70.97% of the elementary school teachers had a CPSQI greater than 5 (poor sleep quality); (4) The analysis of the effects of background variables on leisure activity participation revealed that the teachers’ leisure activity participation differed significantly by age, education degree, length of service, and school size (P<.05); (5) The analysis of the effects of background variables on job stress showed that job stress varied significantly by school location and school size (P<.05); (6) The analysis of effects of background variables on sleep quality indicated that the teachers’ sleep quality differed significantly between genders (P<.05); (7) The correlations among leisure activity participation, job stress, and sleep quality: participation in sports and fitness activities was negatively and significantly related to the work load, class management, and administrative support dimensions of job stress (P<.05); participation in knowledge and art-based activities was not significantly related to any dimension of sleep quality (P<.05); overall, job stress was positively and significantly related to sleep quality (P<.05). Conclusion: Generally, elementary school teachers in Kinmen County suffered poor sleep quality, had an intermediate-to-low level of leisure activity participation, and considered class management as the main source of job stress. Participation in sports and fitness activities was effective in reducing job stress from work load, class management, and administrative support; overall, job stress was positively and significantly related to sleep quality. Only by increasing leisure activity participation and changing individual lifestyle could the teachers alleviate job stress and further improve sleep quality. Results of this study could contribute to policy formulation, physical and mental health of elementary school teachers, and also be a reference for future research.
