However, few studies have addressed people’s attitudes toward code-mixing in written context from online news media. A total of 139 participants from different background variables completed the questionnaire. Code-mixing examples in the questionnaire were selected in online news from the year of 2015-2017. Four types of code-mixing were studied in this research: (1) quotation (2) expressiveness (3) conventional use (4) juxtaposition. The main goal in this study is to find out participants’ general attitudes toward overall code-mixing (CM) phenomenon and especially four categories of English-Mandarin code-mixing in the written context of online mandarin news in Taiwan. The major results in this study: (1) most participants on the whole showed negative attitudes toward English code-mixing in online Mandarin news. (2) participants like English code-mixing with the function of “juxtaposition” the most, which is followed by “conventional use,” “quotation,” and finally “expressiveness.”(3) there is no statistically significant relationship between participants’ background variables (gender, education, frequency of using code-mixing) and their attitudes toward English code-mixing. (4) there is a correlation between age and Type 3 code-mixing acceptance (the function of conventional use). (5) there is a correlation between the frequency of using code-mixing and Type 1 code-mixing acceptance (the function of quotation). To summarize, the study attempts to add the understanding of Taiwanese online viewers’ language attitudes toward English code-mixing in online Mandarin news in Taiwan and in this way more attention can be shifted on language attitude research.
