This study examined the distribution of gender awareness and the gender role stereotypes in elementary school national textbooks using the content analysis method with the textbooks of the South publishing edition, the Kang Hsuan publishing edition, and the Han Lin publishing edition first volume, and volume one to volume twelve; giving a total of 39 books used in this study that were analyzed in terms of gender awareness and gender stereotypes of the pictures and the text within these textbooks.The conclusions of this study were as follows:1.The number of male characters in the textbooks was higher than that of female characters, and the proportion of occurrences was uneven.2.Regarding role traits, male characters were mostly display instrumental traits, while female characters were mainly show expressive traits.3.In terms of domestic work, female characters still performed most of the household chores.4.In the career category, the number of different male occupations that were shown and were engaged in were much higher than those shown for female characters’ career choices. Depending on the result of this study, the researcher summarized some concrete recommendations for textbook editors, all teachers in schools, and researchers as a reference in the further research.
