The study herein, would like to detect the quarantine thrips in imported agricultural products using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Specific primers based on the internal nuclear spacer (ITS), well-known marker used to identify species, were employed to identify three quarantine thrips of Anaphothrips obscurus (Müller), Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande, and Thrips fuscipennis Haliday. Moreover, to detect the distribution frequency of invasive species of western flower thrips (F. occidentalis), multiplex PCR accompanied with morphological characters were used to identify thrips sampling from montane areas because F. occidentalis has been found locally adaptive in central montane. Six thrips species acquired from imported crops and 12 thrips species sampling in montane areas were found. Two frequency species, i.e. F. occidentals and Thrips tabaci Lindeman, were commonly found in imported crops. Although the commonly found thrips in montane areas were Frankliniella intonsa (Trybom), Frankliniella cephalica (Crawford), and Thrips palmi Karny, the invasive F. occidentalis was still with 7%. In this study, we demonstrated multiplex PCR based on specific primers of ITS could be a reliable, alternative, and diagnostic tool to identify quarantine and invasive western flower thrips. Moreover, one new species, Thrips hehuanshanensis sp. n., from Hehuanshan and Tatajie montane areas was named and described, it only could be found in elevation higher than 2500 m.
