To develop the regional development plan requires the overall influential factors consideration. However, the definition and the forming process of regional revitalization is not clear to the general public. Hence, the purpose of this study is to focus on the ecosystem mechanism of regional revitalization, explicitly examining the main actors, environmental conditions, and facilitators. Design/methodology/approach A multiple case study approach of 3 regional revitalization cases from Japan and Taiwan are used to explore the new area. Through the ecosystem perspective to analyze the main factors which influence the regional revitalization. Findings The ecosystem structure of regional revitalization is proposed, including the main actors, environmental conditions, and its facilitators. Originality/value While the term regional revitalization is popular currently, little research has found that explores the main structure and success factors of regional revitalization. The results bring the suggestions for implementing the regional revitalization to the general public and government. Through the reference ecosystem structure, simplifying the difficulties of plan and implementation, eventually improving the regional economy successfully.
