Only a few scholars in the past thought envy had positive effect on the individuals. This study based on the affective event theory and argues that when the supervisors distinguish subordinate into the internal and external groups may cause leader-member exchange social comparison (LMXSC). LMXSC will trigger employees’ envy affection (benign envy and malicious envy) and further influence the behaviors of workplace gossip and workplace ostracism. Research samples were collected through the survey including 130 valid pair questionnaires from the employees and colleagues. The results of this study showed that: (1) there was a positive relationship between LMXSC and benign envy; (2) there was a negative relationship between benign envy and workplace ostracism; malicious envy was positively related to negative gossip and workplace ostracism; (3) benign envy mediated the relationship between LMXSC and workplace ostracism. Finally, we further discussed and illustrated the study implications in management, research suggestions in the future, and the limitations in this study according to the study results.
