Within just 54 years, five dynasties successively ruled northern China. Each dynasty had lasted for a short period. The autonomous military regime was the distinguishing characteristic of this period. The first two dynasties of Five Dynasties Later Liang(後梁)and Later Tang(後唐) discussed in this thesis, were founded separately by Zhu Wen (朱溫) and Sha-t'o Li Cunxu(沙陀人李存勗). They made good use of the decline of Tang Dynasty to expand powerful military forces on regime. However, the jurisdiction of these two newly established government had only existed in North China. How would these two founders declare the legitimacy of Later Liang and Later Tang in China and prove the throne they had acquired among other major forces in the North and South. This would be the subject mainly discussed in this thesis. The founders of Later Liang and Later Tang had differed in their claims of orthodoxy because of their birth and the way they obtained the throne. Later Liang’s founder, Zhu Wen, displayed he inherited Tang Dynasty’s throne after the nearly 300-year regime had been overthrown. He hoped to achieve an orthodox regime by the way of the demise to get the people’s loyalty and other autonomous regimes’ acknowledgement. Li Cunxu, Later Tang’s founder, born as an outlander, had established an exotic regime in North China. How had he convinced his people Later Tang’s throne was orthodoxy. This thesis wants to discuss how Zhu Wen and Li Cunxu defined their regimes’ orthodoxy from the statements of historical materials, and compare these two emperors’ orthodox claims and practical results, so that we can further understand if the results of their proposals and claims are as expected.
