However, in order to obtain the optimal coding tree unit (CTU), it is necessary to traverse each coding unit of all sizes in the quad-tree. Compared to 9 intra-prediction modes in H.264/AVC, HEVC has increased to 35 intra-prediction modes resulting in improving intra-frame coding performance with the penalty of higher computational complexity of encoding. This paper proposes an algorithm of improving intra-prediction mode decision using a two-stage rough mode decision (RMD) and early terminating coding-unit partition based on the texture in the coding units. The experimental results show that compared with the HEVC reference software HM16.20, the proposed method can save an average of 32.24% of encoding time with only 2.476% Bjontegaard delta bit-rate (BD-BR) increasing and 0.303dB Bjontegaard delta peak-signal-to-noise ratio (BD-PSNR) loss of reconstructed video.
