We compare the extraction difference and efficiency between water distillation, steam distillation and Soxhlet extraction method. Percutaneous penetration effects of these two essential oils on vitamin C and methylparaben were also performed. In addition, fennel and cardamom essential oils were tested for their antibacterial ability. The results of Soxhlet extraction is quite different from distillation method. In addition to the volatile components, there are more solvent reaction products and low-polarity, high-boiling vegetable oils or fatty acids in Soxhlet extraction method. The experimental group which added of fennel essential oil was significantly inhibited the percutaneous penetration of vitamin C. In the promotion of percutaneous penetration of methylparaben, the experimental group which added of fennel essential oil was no effect on methylparaben. In the test group added cardamom essential oil, the penetration of vitamin C was also inhibited, while the penetration of methylparaben increased with time. This shows that essential oils have an effect on percutaneous absorption of certain ingredients. In addition, fennel and cardamom essential oils have good antibacterial effects and can be used as an alternative anti-corrosion system for cosmetics and care products.
