Summary:碩士 === 國立屏東大學 === 視覺藝術學系碩士班 === 107 === Yu Shinan is regarded as one of the four greatest calligrapher in the early Tang Dynasty. His calligraphy work blends both the elements of strength and softness, Which profoundly inherited the spirit of Duo Wang (Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi), which has won Yu the title as “the gentleman of concealed talents”. The author acknowledged the shortage of further studies on the Yu’s calligraphy monograph “The Essence of Calligraphy Strokes”, owing to this, the focus and main theme of this research is to explore the infinite charm and long-lasting calligraphy achievements bloomed and delivered by this calligrapher with “the beauty of calmness and serenity”. Summary of this thesis is as below: Chapter 1: Introduction. To describe the subject and motivations for studies, purpose, methods, and to summarize historical literature results as supports for progress on this research. Chapter 2: To analyze and summarize The life background of Yu Shinan, and further integrate and briefly introduce his academic environment, character, political experience and historical evaluations. Chapter 3: Analyzing the content of “Study on the Essence of Calligraphy Strokes”, which fully presented the aesthetic viewpoints Yu Shinan reflected on his calligraphy works; within the content, “solid among fingers, void between palms” indicates the unique technique of calligraphy pencraft applied by Yu. Last but not the least, the episode of “the delicate match” comes as a perfect classic piece of work, which the author meticulously studied, analyzed and interpreted. Chapter 4: Possessing both talents and moralities, Yu Shinan received the honorable title as “a man of five absolute merits”; this chapter listed Yu’s achievements in the realms of liberal arts, including the literary and calligraphy influences Yu impacted the later generations. Chapter 5: Conclusion, to integrate the entire thesis and summarize the research results, and to describe the lineage, moral quality, calligraphy origin, calligraphy theory, calligraphy features, artistic works and influences on later generations respectively.
