Since there are fewer researches in Taiwan focused on these innovative acts, the subject of this study is to focus on the newly formed Wugi Troupe, which is based in Taichung and shows its performances by combining folk art parades with stunts and circus acts. The goal is to understand how they choreograph new acts, transform and achieve breakthrough performances, as well as to analyze how they incorporate new elements into their performances. This study firstly chose three short acts – Warring Currents, View from the Top as Eagles Spread their Wings and Soar, and God Welcoming Festival at the Waterfront in the City of Flowers – for analyses. In addition, The Classic of Mountains and Seas, the first evening-length production in theater, as well as Wu-kong, a large-scale outdoor production, were chosen for analysis. Research methods consisted of work analysis, interviews, and observations. First were the breakdowns of the performance structures based on image and video collections. Rehearsal observations and choreographer interviews were later conducted for further analysis on the characteristics, structures, and methods of performances. The result of this study shows that Wugi Troupe knows how to make good use of different performance venues and situations, in order to emphasize their uniqueness in the performances. Elements of performance and character interpretations are mixed with stunts, dances, and theatrical productions inspired by literary and folklore characters. Furthermore, they use various special stunts and new circus props to show new possibilities of traditional performances and interpret the god and ghost characters in works through the different features of stunts. Last but not least, the troupe has developed new routines and groundbreaking choreographies by working with different choreographers. CHANG,SZU-CHING 張思菁 2019 學位論文 ; thesis 101 zh-TW
