Taiwan once accomplished a great success in the world with its low labor costs. However, the costs of labor and land increased rapidly during the 1980s, innovation plays an important role for Taiwanese manufacturers in the face of tough competition from low-cost countries. It is also elaborated in previous documents that more efficient innovation can make manufacturers more competitive. In this paper, we examine the impacts of firms’ R&D investments on the number of patent applications with data provided by TEJ. By using the negative binomial regression, we find that firms with more R&D investments are likely to have more patent applications. In order to ensure the short-term exclusive benefits brought by the possession of patents, besides making profits for the manufacturers, it is more important to keep devoting part of the R&D returns to R&D, so that R&D activities can continue to develop. Subsequent to this, some other influence variables have been added to discuss whether the manufacturer’s direct investment in China or the total export value of the manufacturers will affect the number of patent applications. The empirical results show that FDI in China and export participations have a significantly positive impact on the number of patent applications. These estimation results may reflect that exporters have external learning effects from export markets, so that exporters’ technology can outperform non-exporters, making R&D investments more successfully.
