Summary:碩士 === 國立臺南大學 === 音樂學系碩士班 === 107 === The purpose of this study is to search Schumann’s “Symphonic Études.” A historical evolution of his piano variations and piano etudes, Schumann’s life, the features in his piano music, the background and the structure of the “Symphonic Études,” and the performing interpretation of this work are investigated. Schumann made a variety of the theme, including rhythmic change, texture stacked, melodic interweaved, and changing tone colors to present varied technical exercises. From the music title, Schumann intended to make this work to be sounded as “Symphony.” Through the research, techniques for Schumann are the sheer assistance of music. Formation doesn’t make contents and minds. When affection was the top priority, free creation became a trend among musicians in the Romantic period. They expressed minds, emotion through music notes. The era was perfectly matched Schumann’s variations and filled with fantasy and creativity. He wished himself to demonstrate the truth and express his most sincere throughts through music. In the “Symphonic Etudes,” Schumann put the idea of variations into this etudes; regardless of harmony, rhythm, melody, even music interpretation are the learning goals. Each etude shows a different personality. Through the texture, rhythm and the melodic line, Schumann expressed his most authentic inner world which was indeed reflected in his music. In addition to showing a variety of techniques in this work, it is also a piano variation that combines musical connotation and innovation. Schumann's unique creative approach of combining variations and etudes in the “Symphonic Études” became one of the most representative piano variations of the Romantic period.
