Voice dubbing means not only dubbing characters’ voices to a video, but also acting those characters’ voices. Dubbing techniques require highly professional training. Voice dubbing is widely used in animations, movies, and TV programs… However, voice dubbing is always ignored by most people in Taiwan. Voice actors and entire dubbing industry in Taiwan have not received much attention. In contrast to Japanese dubbing industry, along with the boom of the animation industry, Japanese voice actors are not only dubbing, but also releasing albums as singers, holding concerts, and producing merchandise as idols. Japanese voice actors are not just dubbing characters’ voices to videos, but gaining large fans among the Japanese idols. Where there is a Japanese voice actor, there is a group of enthusiastic fans, and this fever has spread from Japan to the whole world.
This research study examines the following three aspects to conduct interviews and questionnaires from the perspective of Taiwan’s voice actors and actresses and the students of the dubbing class in The Chinese Television System Inc. Those three aspects are: 1) the issues of the Taiwan ‘s dubbing industry, 2) the difficulties faced by Taiwan’s voice actors, 3) if Taiwan’s voice actors increase their popularity, like the Japanese voice actors, will their popularity give impacts on the entire Taiwan’s dubbing industry? Based on those perspectives, this research study discusses the issues of Taiwan’s dubbing industry and the difficulties faced by Taiwan’s voice actors. Through the references and research data, this study analyzes the issues of Taiwan’s dubbing industry. In the final stage, this study considers the idolized phenomenon of Japanese voice actors, and its possibility that Taiwan’s dubbing industry would develop towards this direction.
