It has obvious differences from traditional Dizi works, which used numerous chromatic scales, alterations, and atonal melodies. The melody and the structure are also unique. Recently, the trend has been developing of blending the western culture with the Chinese culture and employing western’s compositional technique to express the beauty of Chinese music, showing different styles and characteristics. Therefore, a large number of composers use modern compositional devices to compose Chinese instrumental works, rendering it more difficult to present works. Now the shoe is on the other foot. With the advancement and development of the playing techniques of Dizi, the traditional playing techniques cannot satisfy the performance of music and Dizi. “Butterfly Dream” as well as alike complex modes, tonality, and atonality and concertos with difficult playing techniques are getting more and more popular with musicians and audience. The author will analyze the melody “Butterfly Dream” with respect to its arrangement of tonal and compositional devices, which came as a breath of fresh air. The work is different from the traditional Dizi works because it has an elegant, artistic conception of deepness. It made useful innovation and enriched Dizi works.
