To make design meet the expectations of users, empathy is indispensable for designer. This study integrates empathy theory in different fields. With practical design testing, this study verify the relevance of empathy and design performance (the degree to which design meets user needs), so that designers can design more flexible and meet the needs of user by applying empathy theory in design process. After investigating the empathy literature in the field of social psychology and design, we conclude that empathy consists of two factors: "ability" and "drive". In this study, the empathy components questionnaire was used to measure the empathy scores of college students. Students were able to complete the design work in rapid design process, and run a peer-to-peer evaluations of their design performance scores in perspective of users. The statistical analysis of the empathy score and the design performance score with the Pearson correlation coefficient yielded the results: the higher the social empathy, the better the design performance.
