Based on appearances of excavations, Jieyue was one of the parts of horse bridles, connected vertical and lateral ropes, and possessed decorative function. The origin of Chinese chariots has been regarded as one of the most important issues of West-East cultural exchange during the late Bronze Ages. Although Jieyue was one of the driving-chariot equipment, it was ignored for a long time. By careful examination of report on the excavation, Jieyue had distinct contexts and developments in Shang and Chou periods, moreover, closely related to contemporary Eurasian culture. In addition, Jieyue not only belonged to horse tags but also clothing ornaments. This study proposes Jieyue was spread with chariots from Eurasian steppe to Anyang. Initially artisans of Anyang casted horse gears with exotic shapes and native motifs, then developed self-style shapes. This study divides into seven chapters. The first chapter introduces the research motivation and purpose, the preview of related essays, the methods, limitations, areas, the definition of Jieyue of this study. The second to fourth chapter individually discusses classification of the Jieyue shaped and their developmental trajectories in Central Plain cultural regions, Northern zone, the areas of Yangtze River(長江)and Huia River(准河). The fifth chapter analyzes the inner and external interactions among Central Plain cultural regions, Northern zone, Yangtze River and Huia River areas, after that, discussing West-East cultural exchange of Jieyue. The sixth chapter analyzes the iconography of foreign and domestic horse bridles to verify the position of Jieyue, and then examines unearthed artifacts and their contexts to illustrate the functions of Jieyue and shifts. The last chapter is the conclusion which discusses characteristics, connotations, designs, cultural factors, functions, developments of social background of Jieyue, and suggests that chariots in Shang and Chou periods were imported goods through the study on interaction and transaction of Jieyue.
