He inherited the musical style and compositional structure from Baroque Period to Classical Period and integrated the personal expression of Romanticism to create the unique and recondite characteristics. This thesis is about Vier ernste Gesänge, Op. 121, the last song cycle by Brahms. The text is according to Ecclesiastes of the Old Testament, 1 Corinthians of the New Testament from the Christian Bible and the Wisdom of Jesus Son of Sirach from the Old Testament of the Catholic Bible. This work reflects Brahms’s understanding of death and love, which is grave and heavy but with expectation and hope. This thesis is divided into five chapters: the first chapter is an introduction for research motivation and methodology; the second chapter includes the biography and the composing style of Johannes Brahms; the third chapter consists the compositional background of the work and the sources of the lyrics; the fourth chapter discusses the interpretation of the work based on the relationship between the texts and the music; final chapter is a conclusion.
