The master-and-apprentice relationships and the allocations of works in temples are clarified to approach the context of this kind of art. The trencadis on the big square blocks (大方堵剪黏) is an art form mostly found in Tainan area because the financial cost was relatively high and the skill was hard to practice. This thesis is the first study focusing on the composition of big square trencadis blocks in temple buildings. It helps to establish the local histories of decoration art of temple and could be applied as the data for following restoration. The Ciji Abode in Xuejia (學甲慈濟宮), the Jintang Hall in Jiali (佳里金唐殿) and the Zhenxing Abode in Jialixing (佳里興震興宮) are three important temples of three settlements established by Han Chinese people in Ming Zheng period (明鄭時期). In the middle of Qing Dynasty, Master Ye Wang (葉王) was invited to make Koji Pottery (交趾陶) to decorate these temples. In Japanese colonial period, Master He Jinlong (何金龍) and his senior from Chaozhou (潮州), Canton (廣東), were invited to restore Ye Wang’s works. They replaced them with new trencadis works and made big square trencadis blocks, which were rarely seen even in Canton, China. After World War Two, the restorations of these temples were practiced by Wang Baoyuan (王保原) of He’s school and Ye Jinlu (葉進祿) of the school of Hong Hua (洪華). They learned the skills and styles of big square trencadis block by deeply observing He’s works and then this kind of art was widespread in the whole Tainan area. It is reasonable that the vocabulary ‘big square’ (大方) of big square trencadis block is derived from the term of carpenter which means an object with a square frame block. The big square block is square or rectangle in shape. They are made in pairs mainly on the walls located at the entrances, courtyard(天井), and the major space of temple, just along the route of worshipping. Therefore, while walking bypass in a raw, these static works are mobilized. It forms a visual experience like watching another kind of folk art, the traditional drama. The themes of big square trencadis blocks are about the famous ancient bibliographies. These stories, called chutou (齣頭) by trencadis masters, had provided an educational function to the temple visitors. Chiou, Bor-Shuenn 邱博舜 2019 學位論文 ; thesis 194 zh-TW
