The research findings are inconsistent. Some found a positive relationship while others found a negative or curve-linear relationship. The study tries to explain the inconsistent relationship with contingency perspective. Based on knowledge management perspective, we propose that business group diversification, institutional distance between home and host country and institutional distance among host countries moderate the relationship between business groups internationalization and performance. This study used data from the “Business groups in Taiwan 2017” published by China Credit Information Service as the sample set and 100 business groups are included. A hierarchical regression model is used to examine the hypothesis. The results show that business group internationalization has positive relationship with business group performance. Regarding to the moderating factors, diversification has no significant moderating effect neither does institutional distance among host countries while institutional distance between home and host countries has negative moderating effects.
