Inspired by the character density calculation performed with the mathematical software MATLAB by the Peking University’s research team in 2014, this study, with the adoption of the processing procedures different from the previous researches on characters, explored the various metrics calculated with the algorithm, such as the distance between connected components (WCCDCC), the ratio of the pixel of strokes to the total pixel of convex hull (CCAR), the ratio of the pixel of closed counter to the total pixel of the filled area of the character (ARH). The processing capability of the calculus software for a large amount of pixel data can analyze traditional Chinese characters with relatively complicated configuration mathematically with a scientific mode in the research on components. With the application of the second axis theory proposed by the Chinese font designer PeiyuanXie in 1996, the study conducted an experiment to explore the relationship between the areas of the pictophonetic component, the internal distance between the components, the complexity of the component and the degree of freedom of permissible positions, starting the leading research before this research topic. Although the rationality of the second axis theory has been initially confirmed, there are still many questions about the lever principle directly related to the theory. Thus, a decision is made to use algorithm metrics for further exploration. The research structure of this paper consists of three experimental trials. For discussion, the Chinese font designer PeiyuanXie declared that Founder Lanting Black controlled by the second axis theory was used in all the research materials during the design process. In the first experiment, a total of 776 compounds with the radicals like person (人), mouth (口), water (水) and hand (手) were selected to discuss the lever principle. In the second experiment, 98 characters were selected mainly for the exploration of the metrics of the component modeling method. In the third experiment, 511 characters were selected to conduct the metric analysis of Zhonggong’s zoom of the character. The results show that: (1) the visual weight of the lever principle does not refer to the component area, but the negative correlation between the component area and the component internal distance is still valid. (2) The right component’s CCAR value and convex hull pixels are not affected by the left component ARH, which can explain why the component modeling method is a fast method for character grouping. (3) The metric research of the Zhonggong’s zoom reveals that the ARH value can reflect the abnormal proportion of the character, and the area of the font cavity at the edge is controlled to an equivalent value to obtain better adjustment. Looking forward to the future field of the research on characters, the research benefiting from the algorithmic metrics will avoid limitations of the long-standing reliance on font designers, and objective standards are expected to identify good and bad character design.
