Firefighting is a uniquely challenging career. Firewomen are special and one of a kind. Firefighters are only few people, yet they play a very huge and crucial role in the entire fire protection industry and our society as a whole. The purpose of this study is to explore why women choose non-traditional firefighting work, the stress of firewomen in the work place, to know the influencing factors of female firefighters' career development, and the networking with other agencies. This study is based on the six female firefighters in the Chiayi County Fire Department. Their personal identity in the firefighting work and career development are discussed through semi structured in interviews. The study found that stable work and salary is an incentive to induce women to enter the firefighting industry. The female firefighters mostly have independent and strong personalities enabling them to have a mature interpersonal relationship and good adaptability in their firefighting jobs. There are still lots of challenging conditions and situations to overcome for women in the firefighting industry. Based on the analysis and findings of the above research results, suggestions are put forward for firewomen, fire department and fire education and training units.
