The thesis opens with the beginning of the regular series of council minute books in 1551 and ends midway through the Arran period, shortly after the reorganization of the burgh by the decree-arbitral of 1583 and in the aftermath of the controversy over the exiled ministers in 1584. It seeks to examine in detail Edinburgh's reactions to the successive crises imposed on it, largely by outside forces, in the intervening period. Since a great deal hinges on the identification of the significant, and at times the insignificant, members of the burgh community, an attempt has been made to give as specific references to them as possible. Seven separate check-lists of various groups and factions have been included as well as full council and kirk session lists. Three tax rolls have also been given in full for this reason, as well as for the new evidence which they provide towards a reinterpretation of the burgh's social and economic structure.
