Summary:The thesis attempts to break away from the frameworks of previous studies on the Lords, most of which tended to follow closely the 'institutional' approaches of wider traditional studies of legislatures. Instead, this study assesses peers' role orientations and behaviour, and the implications for the bicameral system, in perhaps one of the most dramatic periods in British politics
