Summary:A new method for the monitoring of filament lamps and low pressure discharge lamps has been developed. The new technique monitors the electrical characteristics of the lamp to provide real time analysis of the lamp's condition, without the need for additional wires or expensive light sensors. The advent of low-cost microcontrollers developed for electrical metering applications means that not only is this technique technologically practical, it is also financially viable. The deployment of this technology, particularly in the case of UV water sterilizers, would improve safety and save the significant expense and environmental impact of unnecessary replacement lamps.
