| Summary: | Exacerbated by a global trend towards greater industrial concentration, competition between container ports is more intense than ever. It is especially true in East Asia as the pre-eminent region in world container throughput, with it alone accounting for more than one third of global container traffic. The market structure of the container port industry in the region has changed dramatically with the emergence of new gateway hubs in mainland China. Dramatic inter-pan competition has become unavoidable as each player vies for a greater market share. As a consequence, inter-port competition is now a major issue in research into the development of the East Asian container port industry. |
