Some insertion reactions of stannous halides with compounds containing metal-metal and metal-halogen bonds have been investigated and found to produce compounds with metal-tin bonds. Many of the products from these reactions have not been previously reported. The low-frequency infrared and Raman spectra of the tri- nuclear compounds [Co (CO) ..l.;SnX.;, Qtr-Cp)Fe (00)232.;2 {.;(tt-Cp)Mo (CC).;32'.;2have been obtained and assigned. The symmetric tin-metal stretching modes were found to be intense in the Raman spectra, and the antisymmetric modes to be strong in the infrared spectra. The nature of the species present in an ethanolic solution of rhodium(III) chloride and stannous chloride has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy, and the reactions of this solution with a number of unsaturated organic compounds have been studied. The reaction of the rhodium(III)-tin(II)-chloride solution with 1, 3-butadiene gives a product containing both co-ordinated butadiene and a rhodium-tin bond. The synthesis of tin(II)-metal bonded complexes of empirical formula (LnM)2 Sn has been attempted, but without success.
