This exploratory study of thirty-two women between the ages of seventeen and forty provides a description of sexuality during a first pregnancy using the conceptual framework of adult development based on Levinson's theory. The two purposes of this study were to study the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and sexual behavior of women pregnant for the first time (these women being at various chronological ages which corresponded to Levinson's four phases of early adulthood), and to assess in more detail the specific developmental life issues of these pregnant women as they interfaced with their perceived sexuality during the time of this first pregnancy. Data collection consisted of the administration of the Sex Knowledge and Attitude Test to the thirty-two volunteer participants who were in the last month of their first pregnancy. After completion of this questionnaire, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight of those volunteers.
