Summary:Perhaps more than any other brass instrument, the tuba repertoire contains numerous unaccompanied pieces including extended techniques. Since the composition of Mauricio Kagel’s Mirum in 1965, unaccompanied works for solo tuba have regularly incorporated extended techniques. This document will examine the extended techniques included in unaccompanied works for solo tuba composed from 1965 to 1973 and 2002 to 2013, examining the similarities and differences in their usage.
