Summary:The study aims to investigate materials waste on building sites in the Gaborone area w ith the view o f making practical recommendations on ways and means o f reducing it to the minimum. A literature search was undertaken in order to review the w ork already done on this subject. A site survey and a questionnaire survey were used to gather data for the study. Additional information was obtained by conducting interviews with site workers. Findings o f the survey support the view that building sites generate large amount o f materials waste. The study concludes that the solution to the problem o f materials waste is through the adoption of effective materials control procedures on site. Suggestions are provided for those considering further research on the subject and finally recommendations are made to the Government, curriculum planners and professional bodies in the building industry on how they should assist in tackling the problem o f materials waste in the building industry.
