Summary:There are many books that come up to ones mind when the name of Eça de Queirós is mentioned. It is mainly Cousin Basílio and widely discussed The Sin of Father Amaro comes in second. A Correspondncia de Fradique Mendes is sometimes falsely being considered as a work of less importance but this witty book full of hidden meanings, symbols and philosophical contemplations brings many valuable innovations into Portuguese literature of the end of the nineteenth century. The paper is focused on search for solutions of difficulties that appear in connection with the translation of this specific text, on search of ways that may help the translator to overcome some obstacles of an interpretation Portuguese text into Czech. It identifies one key to success, which is a thorough comprehension of the original text and thorough knowledge of theory of translation. Such a comprehension requires wide range of information on which it can be based. These were presented in the first part of this paper, focused on author's life and work in context of Portuguese cultural background and in the second part, which analyses A Correspondncia de Fradique Mendes as a whole as well as the main character Fradique Mendes.
