Summary:This overview study attempts to categorize and summarize psychological aspects of secondary victimization, a topic that has not been dealt with comprehensively in scientific literature so far. The author adds personal experience from his professional career with the police. It is the police that is most commonly labeled as the source of secondary victimization. This paper focuses mainly on the psychological aspects of the pre-trial stage of criminal proceedings and its connection to secondary victimization, paying attention to the manifestation of secondary victimization during the whole process as well as during the particular operations of criminal proceedings. This work includes a list of intervention options and outlines various possibilities of helping victims of criminal offenses by all the concerned parties, i.e. laymen, the state as well as non-governmental organizations.
