| Summary: | This thesis presents a retrospective analysis evaluating incidence of early postoperative complications of total thyreoidectomy and hemithyreoidectomy using conventional surgical techniques and harmonic scalpel. The first part describes the history of surgery of thyroid gland, its topography and indications. It also describes surgical procedures on the gland, along with possible postoperative complications and possibilities of their prevention. It summarizes development of new methods and instruments in thyroid surgery in recent years. The second part compares the aforementioned surgical methods to assess contribution of harmonic scalpel as a potential tool for prevention of postoperative complications. |
