The dissertation traces the motif of divine negative and positive action enacted on the same subject in two subsequent stages. The starting point provides the formula "The LORD brings death and makes alive", found in 1Sam 2:6 along with its slightly modified version in Deut 32:39. The author demonstrates exegetically the presence of the motif in a number of Old Testament narratives. Next he looks for the motif in the Gospel of Luke and Pauline letters. A precedent for the biblical usage of the motif he identifies in Mesopotamian writings. Subsequently the author examines several theologies of the Old Testament, evaluating to what extent they utilize the motif. It is found that the motif in question proclaims two features of divine character - his omnipotence (inclusive his ability to cause harm) and kindness or loyalty. At the same time, their sequence is set: "death" (often metaphorical) precedes "life". The fact that life prevails in the end makes this thought-pattern into one of the threads of the Old Testament faith that give the whole a very positive, even resurrection-prone, look. The pattern, however, is also very apt at accommodating the dark aspects of reality.
