This diploma thesis observes important aspects concerning the culture of spoken speech. It is especially concentrated on the level of speech communicates. The thesis includes a theoretical part dealing with the specifics of spoken speech, sound form of speech and associated optical signs. An individual chapter is devoted to stylistic factors, which form the language expression in a significant way; furthermore to key competences, which the pupils at the end of elementary education should be familiar with, as well as the competition Mladý Démosthenes (?Young Démosthenes?), which is focused on the art of communication and its development. The practical part is represented with two individual chapters. The first one deals with the research including characteristics of the participated elementary schools, defined terms and main observed factors. The second part is represented with the analysis of the spoken speeches of the observed sample of elementary school pupils. It is a comparison of prepared as well as unprepared communicates, which occured on the basis of the evaluation of comparative recording sheets. The aim of the research inquiry was to find out the level of language abilities and skills of 9th class pupils of elementary schools. The thesis is concluded with a summary of achieved observations. In the attachments, there is an arrangement of charts, graphical illustrations and the full version of comparative recording sheets.
