From many in vitro studies on both vertebrate and invertebrate cell lines, adenosine is known to reduce cell survival. The mechanism of adenosine action seems to be complex and largely cell type specific resulting from either activation of specific adenosine receptors or adenosine uptake into cells. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms of adenosine toxicity in fruit fly cell lines. Experiments showed that adenosine toxicity correlated with the level of adenosine uptake, its adenosine kinase mediated phosphorylation and incorporation into cellular ATP pool.
